Actors in zones of extraction have been essential in the approval or rejection of the EIA and thus in deciding the fate of mining projects.
As per the EIA Notification, 2006 under Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, the mining of minerals with more than 50 hectare of mining lease area (Asbestos mining irrespective of mining area) are categorized as Category-A projects. In case of coal mining projects, mining lease area more than150 hectares are categorized as category-A projects.
